UK Dashboard/Energy/Fossil Fuels

Fossil Fuels

Gas and fossil fuel electricity generation from NESO data.

The role of gas

Natural gas (mainly CCGT plants) is the UK's largest single source of electricity, providing flexible generation that ramps up when wind is low and down when renewables are abundant.

Coal phase-out

Coal generation has fallen dramatically in the UK, from 30% of electricity in 2014 to near zero by 2024. The UK plans to phase out coal power completely.

Fossil Fuel Share of Generation

Fossil Fuel Share of UK Electricity

Daily percentage of electricity from fossil fuels (gas, coal, oil). From NESO Historic Generation Mix.

Gas Electricity Generation

Gas Electricity Generation

Daily electricity from natural gas plants (CCGT and other gas). The UK's largest single source.

About This Data

Source: National Energy System Operator (NESO) Historic Generation Mix dataset.

Update frequency: Daily aggregates from half-hourly grid data.

Note: Fossil fuel share includes gas, coal, and oil generation. Coal generation is now near zero in most periods.
