How to read these indicators

These measures track the financial health of UK households. The saving ratio is the share of disposable income households save rather than spend, and the debt-to-income ratioshows how large household debt is relative to annual income — both measured in per cent. Real disposable income and household consumption are inflation-adjusted (chained volume) figures in £ millions, so they can be compared on the same chart.

Add any of these to Chart Studio to compare income against spending directly.

Income & Saving

Household Saving Ratio

Share of households' gross disposable income that is saved rather than spent, seasonally adjusted. ONS UK Economic Accounts.

Real Household Disposable Income

Households' disposable income after inflation, chained volume measure (2023 prices), seasonally adjusted, £m per quarter. ONS.

Spending

Household Consumption

Household final consumption expenditure, chained volume measure, seasonally adjusted, £m per quarter. ONS.

Real disposable income and consumption share the same unit (£m, chained volume). Plot them together to see when households spend more than their income grows.

Debt

Household Debt to Income Ratio

Total household financial debt as a percentage of gross disposable income, annual. ONS UK Economic Accounts.

Why the debt ratio matters

The debt-to-income ratio compares how much households owe with how much they earn in a year. A ratio of 100% means household debt equals a full year of disposable income.

It climbed steeply through the 2000s housing boom, peaked before the 2008 financial crisis, and has since come down as households deleveraged. This series is annual and not seasonally adjusted.
